Sajid Javid’s spending round announced a higher than expected £6.2 billion increase in NHS funding next year over and above the extra £34 billion announced last year. This included the provision of more training and professional development for doctors and nurses along with over £2 billion of new capital funding starting with an upgrade of 20 hospitals during the year. What’s more £250 million will be provided for ground-breaking new artificial intelligence technologies to help solve some of healthcare’s biggest modern challenges, such as easier cancer detection, discovering new treatments and relieving the workload on doctors and nurses.
This is all very welcome indeed and along with our member charities and activists we will be campaigning to ensure that our manifesto asks are achieved and that this funding includes:
- The establishment of clinical fellowships to grow the number of practicing specialist neuro-oncologists
- Clinicians being given protected time to carry out clinical research into new and better treatments for brain tumour patients
- At least 15% of brain tumour patients participating in clinical trials by 2025
What’s more we will scrutinise these spending plans and continue to campaign for an increase in national investment into brain tumour research to £35 million by 2025.
