A trio of pals have taken on their “toughest challenge yet” in support of our Fundraising Group In Kev’s Memory.
It’s inspired by husband and father-of-two Kev O’Mahoney who died just a year after his diagnosis, aged 53. His closest mates, known as “The Lads”, like to take on an annual walking challenge, which has seen them take on the likes of the length of Hadrian’s Wall and the 160km Cotswold Way.
Kev’s brother Ges, brother-in-law Jim and friend Steve, climbed Scotland’s highest peak, Ben Nevis, by the most challenging route, followed by a number of other mountains of over 3,000ft as they completed the West Highland Way. Over their week of hiking, the trio covered a distance of 122km, an average of 17.5km a day and climbed 14,878ft (not far off the equivalent of the height of Mount Blanc).
Ges said: “The weather made this challenge even more demanding, with howling winds, sleet and hail hampering planned ascents and ensuring we were soaked through at the end of every day.
“Towards the end of the challenge, we had around two weeks’ worth of rainfall in two days – 125mm – when the typical rainfall in the West Highlands for the whole of the month of October is 350mm.”
