A woman who learned she had a brain tumour aged 30 is supporting our Advent Appeal this December.
Katie Smith was diagnosed with a low-grade oligoastrocytoma after she was struck down with debilitating headaches just weeks after returning from her honeymoon. She was given the agonising prognosis that she may not live to see her 40th birthday. Just over two years later, when her son Eli was nine months old, Katie’s tumour had progressed to grade 3 and recategorised as an oligodendroglioma.
Now on the 11th day, Katie, 38, is sharing her story to support our Advent Appeal to raise funds and awareness to help find a cure for brain tumours.
She said: “I am really lucky to be part of the 12% who have survived five years beyond their original brain tumour diagnosis. Unfortunately, that means there are a huge amount of people who didn’t get those extra five years and didn’t get those extra five Christmases with their families.”
