Honouring a special birthday for Lydia’s Wish

2 min read

Today we remember Lydia Carfrae-Brohaska, the inspiration for our Fundraising Group Lydia’s Wish, on what should have been her 40th birthday.

Lydia was diagnosed with a glioblastoma (GBM), aged 35, in 2018, after it was initially thought she might have multiple sclerosis. When her condition started to deteriorate in early 2020, Lydia’s husband Stu brought her back to the UK from Texas where they were living, not long before the country went into lockdown because of COVID-19. Lydia passed away peacefully with her family in her hometown of Wakefield in May 2020.

Carrie, Lydia’s sister (pictured above with their parents on Lydia’s wedding day), said: “Friday 2nd February would have been my sister, Lyd's 40th birthday.  And to us, it still is.  We're going ahead with celebrating the vibrancy and joy of her life – however cruelly cut short it was.

“Friends and family from around the world will be raising a French 75 (Lyd's favourite cocktail) to remember, with so much love, this beautiful and wonderful person on her special day.

“Nothing can ever take away our love for Lyd, and the everlastingly positive imprint that her life had on us all, and this is why today will be such a special, albeit, bittersweet day.

“Lyd, we love you now and for always - happy birthday my darling.”

We send our best wishes to all Lydia’s loved ones, today especially.
