Brain Tumour Research is mayor’s charity of the year

The mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf has selected Brain Tumour Research as one of her charities of the year.

Elected member for the Llwynypia ward, Councillor Wendy Lewis, has chosen to support the charity after losing her husband, Paul to a high-grade brain tumour in March 2008, just two months after he was diagnosed.

Paul was just 45 when he died, leaving Wendy and their three children.

Wendy, pictured with her eldest son Christopher who is her mayor’s consort, said: “Brain tumour research is so poorly funded and ever since Paul’s death I have wanted to do something to help change this.

“Brain tumours seem to be a hidden disease when you compare it to other cancers such as breast cancer or prostate cancer. Often there are no lumps that you can feel for. In Paul’s case he had physical symptoms, but I know from patient to patient the symptoms can differ dramatically.

“If we are to understand this devastating disease and find better treatment options to improve the outcomes for patients and their families, we must have the funding to do this.”

The partnership, which runs until May 2024, teed off with a golf day at Rhondda Gold Club last week (Friday 15th September). Over the next nine months, Cllr Lewis is organising quiz nights, dinner events and fun family activities to raise money for Brain Tumour Research and her three other chosen charities: the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society (SANDS) and Hope Rescue.
