Brain tumour patient inspires teen’s 15-mile charity run

A teenager who “hates running” is preparing to take on a 15-mile run to raise money for Brain Tumour Research.

Alfie Saunders is taking part in our Run 15 in February challenge, which tasks participants with running either 15 miles, 15km or on 15 days throughout the month, to celebrate our 15th anniversary.

The 16-year-old from West Sussex is planning to run 15 miles from his home East Grinstead to his grandmother’s house in Crowborough.

Alfie said: “I said if my fundraising total reached £300 before the challenge started, I’d run 15 miles over two days and if it reached £500, I’d do it in one, which is what’s happened. I hate running but it is for a good cause.”

Alfie’s inspiration comes from his girlfriend’s mum, Karen Turner, who was diagnosed with a secondary brain tumour after suffering with dizziness and fatigue in August 2023.

The 48-year-old had two radiotherapy sessions and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

Alfie, who has been with his girlfriend Freya for a year (both pictured above with Karen), said: “Karen’s brain tumour diagnosis has turned her life upside down. I just want to save others from going through the same hell and this challenge is my way of doing that.”

Charlie Allsebrook, our Community Development Manager, said: “With one in three of us knowing someone affected by a brain tumour, Karen’s story is, sadly, not unique. It’s only by working together that we will be able to improve treatment options for patients and, ultimately, find a cure. We’re very grateful for Alfie’s support.’
