Bereaved family mark dad’s birthday with festival fundraiser

A West Midlands family will remember their much-loved dad on what would have been a milestone birthday.

Barry Smith, from Belbroughton, died a year after he was diagnosed with a glioblastoma (GBM) in February 2021. It came after periods of confusion and changes in his once bubbly and welcoming personality. He was 62.

Hundreds are expected at The Talbot pub in Belbroughton on Friday (12th January), a day after what would have been Barry’s 65th birthday.

His widow Jacqui, and two daughters Lydia, 25, and Lorna, 22, are hosting a huge festival fundraiser to raise money for Brain Tumour Research, hoping to add to the already impressive total of £7,000.

Lydia said: “Dad was a huge personality but became a shadow of himself. When he died during lockdown restrictions, we received a huge outpouring of love. We knew that when the time was right, we wanted to do something so everybody whose life he touched, has a chance to celebrate him.

“We must make people aware of the gross underfunding that this disease receives in line with other cancers.”
