Buckingham fundraisers pedal for research into brain tumours

Buckingham fundraisers formed a peloton as part of a national spinathon event to help raise funds for research into brain tumours.

The national On Yer Bike event organised by charity Brain Tumour Research  encouraged cyclists across the country to dust off their gym kits and thunder through the miles to raise thousands of pounds for research into the devastating disease.

The charity’s Chief Executive, Sue Farrington Smith, who lives in Padbury, formed a team of fundraisers at the Swan Pool and Leisure Centre to thundered through the miles on Saturday 3rd February. With donations still coming in the national event looks to raise around £20,000.

It costs £2,740 to fund a day of research at one of Brain Tumour Research Centres of Excellence, where scientists are focused on improving outcomes for patients and, ultimately, finding a cure.

Brain tumours are indiscriminate; they can affect anyone, at any age. What’s more, they kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease.

Carol Robertson, Head of Community Fundraising (North) for Brain Tumour Research, and took part in the challenge said: “We challenged people to saddle-up and ride for research, and they didn’t disappoint. We’d like to thank everyone who took part in On Yer Bike, as well Direct Pizza Company, who provided some much-needed relief for our Buckingham riders.”

This was the third time an On Yer Bike for Brain Tumour Research event has been held in Buckingham. On one previous occasion Sue was joined by the Rt Hon John Bercow MP for Buckingham and Speaker of the House of Commons, who is also a patron of the charity.
