National brain tumour research funding needs to increase to £35 million a year

Kiltwalkers raise thousands to help find a cure

Kiltwalkers across Scotland have raised more than £13,500 so far to help find a cure for brain tumours.

Taking place last weekend, Scotland’s Virtual Kiltwalk saw participants choosing their own challenge. Whether walking, running, jogging or anything in between, thousands of participants went the extra mile for their chosen charity.

Amongst those who took part to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research was Lesleyanne Gibson and her team of Kiltwalkers. Lesleyanne was inspired to fundraise after her husband, Robbie, was diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year.

Robbie underwent emergency surgery for a grade 3 oligodendroglioma in February. He underwent radiotherapy, which finished on Friday, and incredibly joined the ‘Robbie’s Ruggie Ramblers’ team to walk nine miles the following day. His chemotherapy treatment will begin in a few weeks.

Lesleyanne said: “Before Robbie’s diagnosis we knew virtually nothing about brain tumours. We were shocked to discover how underfunded research into brain tumours is, and this really spurred the team on to fundraise for Brain Tumour Research.

“Last month, I and my small business colleagues raised £3,000 from online events which we donated to Brain Tumour Research. My sister has also signed up for the Jog 26 Miles in May challenge and has raised £1,250 so far.

“It meant so much to all the team to raise as much as we could for Robbie and we are very proud to have raised nearly £8,000 together.”

This year, Sir Tom Hunter and The Hunter Foundation will be topping all funds by 50%, meaning the team’s final fundraising total will be more than £10,000.

Thank you to all of our amazing supporters who took part in Scotland’s Virtual Kiltwalk last weekend. The funds you have raised really will make a difference in the fight against brain tumours.
