Virtual Walks of Hope

Help us fund the fight. Together we will find a cure.

How will the Virtual Walks of Hope work?

All four of our Virtual Walks of Hope will be a leisurely 10-kilometre ramble (approx. 6 miles) to allow as many people to join in virtually from where they’re walking. Events begin at 9.45am and finish at about 12.30pm.

Each walk leader will start off with a short Facebook live at 9.45am to welcome all walkers, wherever you, to their regional Virtual Walk of Hope, before a prompt 10am start for the walk itself.

All walkers should then just follow their own routes, taking some selfies and scenery shots and sharing photos and comments in real time on the Facebook event page for the regional Walk of Hope you’ve joined.

Get snappy!

We want as many pictures and comment as possible – we really want you all to show off all of your walks: we want to see and share all of our wonderful walkers, and all of the wild and wide landscapes you’re walking in. And share these photos in your own networks too to inspire further donations – there’s nothing like seeing your event happening live to spur on people to give in that moment.

Half way there!

At the mid-way point, about 11.15am, our walk leaders will each start a new Facebook live chat to see how everyone’s doing, share anecdotes from your walks, comment on great photos shared so far, see who’s had success in fundraising so far, enjoy refreshments and a snack together, before setting off again at roughly 11.35am, to complete the rest of the walk.

Celebration time!

At the end of your event, at about 12.30pm, our walk leader will open a quick Facebook live opportunity for everyone to celebrate all of our collective walking achievements and share brilliant group photos, before we all say our virtual goodbyes and heading off for a local pub lunch (taking full advantage of the Government’s ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ offer!).

Planning for Your Walk

Wherever your walk will take place, be aware and stay safe, and remember to:

  • Follow Government advice on Covid-19 and social distancing
  • Take your Brain Tumour Research face mask with you – available from ebay if you’ve not purchased yours yet
  • Wear walking boots / shoes and comfortable, suitable walking clothes
  • Check the weather forecast and prepare appropriately – waterproofs, sun cream, sunglasses, hats etc
  • Make sure your mobile is fully charged before you start
  • Carry refreshments such as water, coffee or tea and energising snacks
  • Take care around open water, making sure children and adults are all being safe and sensible
  • Keep dogs on leads where requested
  • Respect your environment and take home any litter
  • Make sure someone knows your route and anticipated timings, if walking alone

Start Fundraising

Once you’ve registered with us to take part, head over to JustGiving to create your fundraising page. Set up a target – we recommend a minimum of £274 (per adult).

When we get confirmation of your fundraising page set up (with this minimum sponsorship target), we’ll send you a free t-shirt to wear on your walk.

If you’re registering on behalf of a family or group, then set a group target based on the number of adults who’ll be walking, and they’ll all get a t-shirt each.

All walkers will get a virtual medal from us after your event. If you beat your target – and we’ll work with you to help you maximise your fundraising – then we’ll send you one of our special Fighting Force medals in the post as well!

If you have personal reasons for fundraise for us – as many of our supporters do – then we recommend you share these in your JustGiving page story; this will inspire people to donate on your page.

Share Your Fundraising

You’re registered and your page is set up? Great, now tell everyone what you’re doing by sharing the news on your social media networks. Include a link to your JustGiving page and use the hashtag #WalkOfHope.

If you want to tell your story in the local media, we can help with that – just email us on media@braintumourresearch.org in the first instance and someone in our PR team will get back to you.
