Pituitary tumours Most pituitary tumours are pituitary adenomas, which are benign (non-cancerous) slow-growing tumours that arise from pituitary tissue. Most are microadenomas (small tumours) although a few patients have macroadenomas, which are larger. The treatment for pituitary adenoma depends on whether it produces hormones or not. Care and treatment should be managed by a team specialising in the treatment of pituitary tumours. This would include an endocrinologist, who is a specialist in diseases of the hormonal system. About 1 in 10 brain tumours (10%) are in the pituitary gland. They are more common in older people.
